How do you find the balance between art and work? Sometimes you can manage on your own but if you surround yourself with fellow artists then you have hands to grab onto if you begin to falter. When Artchix began in 2002 we wanted a group where we could support each other in continually creating new art. So it began – every 4-6 weeks we meet at one of our homes, eat dinner together, and then present the pieces that we’ve complete, something inspired by a theme or topic decided upon at the previous meeting. This is our first group show and we’re delighted to have this wonderful space at Café Lulu for our world premiere.

Our artist this month is Holli Margell. Previously a wedding photographer, Holli has transitioned to photographing the details of everyday life. Her current show is full of photographs in and around the Northwest.

As an addition to being available to chat during Art Walk, Holli is donating 50% of her total sales to the West Seattle Food Bank. Sugar Rush Baking Company will have a donation bin all month long to collect non-perishable food items that will also be donated to the Food Bank. Also, during Art Walk, if you bring in 2 items for donation, Holli will give you a photo card gift as a thank you for supporting the Food Bank.

West Seattle Cellars January Artist: Jo Gershman

We are extending our December artist through January. West Seattle artist and illustrator Jo Gershman shares her love of storytelling and her passion for food in these elaborately composed meditations on Earth's natural bounty. Each watercolor painting relates to a specific season or place, portrayed in loving detail with an added twist -- the images appear to be painted on glazed tile. This trompe l'oeil device recalls the remarkable depth of detail in medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Jo has illustrated over 30 books, and her watercolors and illuminated manuscripts are in private collections in several countries.

At our tasting on this month's Art Walk Thursday, January 12, we will be featuring Spanish wines from Casa Ventura, an importer based in Bellingham. As always, we'll be joined by the delightful and knowledgeable Laura Stiff, to tell us all about the wines she has selected to pour that evening.

"My acrylic mixed media canvas paintings are visual translations of my inner thoughts, emotions, memories, and experiences. By relying on a fertile faith in not knowing the outcome, I listen for an inner voice that determines direction and speaks finality. I’m passionate about color and movement and its vivid interplay with personal sentiments. The emotional impact of color and the turbulent nature of life provide me with abundant subject matter. I love to combine this with multiple perspectives of life and environmental elements in nature. Hand dyed fibers, broken glass, and other recycled mixed media adorn my compositions to enhance the textural appeal. "After growing up in Northern Michigan I took a classs in the Outwardbound program in the Glacier Peak area, a 24 day mountaineering and survival course. I fell in love with the Northwest. I worked in a number of National Parks such as Mt. Rainier and The Grand Canyon as a chef. I was able to get a lot of hiking and climbing in. After a number of chance encounters with wildlife, I decided I needed to have a camera with me.

This was about 12 years ago. With the digital age, I jumped right in and have been putting together my camera gear as I could afford it. Right now it's a serious hobby, but hope to get to the next level eventually."

I achieve this via research into historical decorative forms, appropriating from diverse fields, such French toile and Soviet avant-garde ‘agit-porcelain.’ The relationship of this research and project to my existing bodies of work includes an interest in colonization and its metaphorical and physical implications in North America, specifically, the founding of the United States as a English colony and the effects of this venture in present-day American culture and political ideologies. My assigned task as an artist is to visualize social and political hierarchies, with a goal to disarm the viewer, revealing unexpected associations and collusions. The relationship between the costumes, clothing, and material culture of the Elizabethan colonial era to the political and metaphorical outcomes of capitalism and colonialism provide rich artistic fodder in my practice."

I am exploring the way light and color play upon and through a single tree. I am interested in each individual tree as a being; as portraits rather than landscapes. My work strives for a balance between illusionistic, built-up paint and thinner, rougher areas that show initial layers of the underpainting. In this way, my paintings respond to the elements of Nature. The raw spaces reveal a history of the painting, resembling the way you can look at a tree and see the growth patterns. The growth of the painting itself is presented, as if it is still in the process of emerging.

"With this series I wanted to address the idea of religion being what one does “religiously”. Whether it’s a physical action, a psychological habit or something mundane that’s repeated again and again, it’s a behavior performed religiously. I paint a lot of animals. I wanted also to focus on the fact that one of the many actions I perform religiously is the painting of animals. I decided to do the whole show with animals without using any personification (no coffee drinking beavers). I’ll be paying attention to the psychological intentions behind the behaviors and adding a slight "church altar" feel to each while leaving theology out of the narrative."

We depend on the seafarers to bring us essential cargo, however it is the 3rd most hazardous occupation. These seafarers work in brutal weather, they are isolated within the confines of the ship, struggle with language barriers, and spend months away from family while battling the natural elements of the sea and sometimes even piracy.

I'm a Seattle New-Brow Artist. I'm inspired by urban culture, the immense wilderness of the Pacific Northwest and the contradiction between the two. Seattle is a perfect example of that contradiction. It's a bustling urban city completely surrounded by the incredible wilderness. It has to be one of the few cities in the United States were you can see bald eagles on your morning bike ride to the coffee shop. It's the balance of two completely contradictory forces that I seek to achieve in my work. Urban is my style of painting with use of aerosols, stencils, textile prints and a bold color palette combined to create beautiful images of animals and a spirit of nature. I use distress and decay and then balance it with aesthetic beauty and the individual narrative of the piece.

Woodinville artist, Gary Greene has worked as a professional artist continuously since 1967. While working in varied media from traditional to digital, colored pencil has been his true passion since 1983.

Patri O’Connor is principally a landscape painter who populates her landscapes with people – a solitary figure walking on the beach, two lovers in a garden, a running figure on a cloud-shrouded morning. Her oils on canvas interpret, rather than represent, creating a dreamlike quality.

After losing Jasmine this summer, it just tears us up to think of an elder dog losing his/her home. Having lost our senior Rottie this summer and with our other 11-year old dog at home, our awareness has turned to the growing number of senior dogs in need of a loving, caring home for their final refuge. In loving memory of Jasmine this holiday season, we would like to reach out to the good folks at the Old Dog Haven,http://www.olddoghaven.org/ , to collect items to help them care for their dogs in need. The Old Dog Haven is a network of private homes helping western Washington's homeless senior dogs. Some of their dogs are with caring foster homes for their final refuge. They also have others available for adoption if you have room and the ability to give to an older dog in need of his/her final loving home.

Curtis Ashby, also known by his moniker CASH, is a young artist who lives and works just outside Tacoma, WA. I have been photographing metallic objects for the past 15 years on weekends....ship hulls….cars….trains…planes…...after a full week of work as an architect. The ship hulls were found in Vancouver BC, Seattle and Tacoma Washington. These photographs are part of an ongoing exploration utilizing large steel ship hulls as the central subject matter in the study of manmade materials and the impact of natural forces upon them. The CAR SHOW photographs were shot during the West Seattle CAR SHOW a few weeks ago.

As an Architect, these explorations become very important to attaining a deeper understanding of the nature of materials. They are also important exercises for me as a visual designer in the evolution of my visual perception that serves my daily pursuit of spatial and form composition.

Some of the original images from these shoots are included in this show. Some of the "composite/collage" images are the result of many iPhone digital manipulations of original images to a level of abstraction. Most of these images were manipulated with an iPhone APP called POP ART. The composite is, in fact, a more minimal, 2 dimensional representation that detaches the meaning of the original object from space and time and opens the reading of the composition to a multiplicity of interpretation. The intent here is to mystify rather than clarify what I have observed.

The CAR SHOW photographs were shot during the West Seattle CAR SHOW a few weeks ago.

I am a Washington State native from Spokane. I knew I loved to paint when I was a young child and first dipped a brush into a jar of tempera paint. I have not stopped painting since. I graduated from the University of Washington School of Art with a BFA, majoring in painting.

I paint landscapes. My subjects are Northwest light, colors, dramatic geography and textures often juxtaposed with the human built environment.

Watercolor has been my media for most of my painting life. I love the immediacy, the wet paint interaction and the colors and values achieved. The paint always does what it wants to do. I push it where I want it to go . . . but of course it does what it wants to do anyway.

The phenomenon of how, through even a few marks of charcoal, an artist can evoke an idea in whoever sees it interests me to no end. In my work I strive to engage the observer in this activity through content, composition, and technique. I have heard it said that the single image is not a very effective way to convey a narrative because it relies on the viewer to bring meaning to it. This suits me just fine. I strive to balance meaning and ambiguity to challenge the viewer to bring their own narrative to my work and hopefully confront and re-evaluate it along the way.

A postcard sent to a friend after visiting the National Gallery's "Art of Gauguin" show with him in 1988
shows up in an oil on canvas that I paint. In 2011 my painting prompts a series of prints using
photocopy litho that I combine with chine colle. Seattle Art Museum will be showing
"Gauguin & Polynesia" in 2012. A friendship spanning more than twenty
years---a passion for postage stamps and letter writing for thirty plus years prior
to that----how do these tie into my fascination with written word and paper? Family,
friends, holiday greetings and birthdays all play a part. I am still uncovering the interrelationships
and influences as I write this statement: soon I will be visiting a Vermont friend I have known
since we were in the first grade. We've had no letters between us for years,
only electronic communication. I invite the reader to investigate for themselves:
how do we make connections? how long do they last?

We look forward to welcoming Phil Stoiber back to display his artwork in our shop. This Thursday, November 10, come and meet Phil and enjoy his showing of prints themed Correspondence. Curiosity is one of the main motives behind my creations. Passion and experimentation are what push me to refine and expand my skills. Each piece I create and every method I use is chosen by its ability to let me explore the vast variety of influences that excite me. Whether that inspiration comes from nature, technology, or fantasy.

Creating or capturing a piece is a process I like to be organic, often this is through freehand and free form techniques. I tend to focus more on contrast or color and detailed texture. However, I have a strong desire of portraying the true beauty of the odd and overlooked aspects of nature and imagination with every artistic creation.

I currently reside in West Seattle where I am exploring macro photography, abstract black and white illustrations, and watercolors. Woodinville artist, Gary Greene has worked as a professional artist continuously since 1967. While working in varied media from traditional to digital, colored pencil has been his true passion since 1983. As a pioneer in the use of water-soluble colored pencils in fine art, some of his hyper-realistic paintings may require upwards of 500 hours to complete. Upon viewing these detailed works, people will often exclaim, “That’s colored pencil?” Gary’s work has garnered national and international awards and is widely collected.

Patri O’Connor is principally a landscape painter who populates her landscapes with people – a solitary figure walking on the beach, two lovers in a garden, a running figure on a cloud-shrouded morning. Her oils on canvas interpret, rather than represent, creating a dreamlike quality. The people in her paintings add a narrative note to the work. Patri is influenced by early memories of travels with her family. From the deserts ofNew Mexico to the jungles of Venezuela, her paintings draw upon diverse landscapes, whether literal or of her own creation. Like a true traveler, Patri says of her method of working, “I show up and the canvas dictates where it wants to go.”

I am the product of the hippy drug culture in the early 70's. The vast amount of drugs and free sex turned out to be a way for a paranoid schizophrenic sex addict/prostitute and a heroine addict/drug dealer with a passionate Peter Pan syndrome to try their hand at the American Dream. The state of Texas Judicial Courts took me out of this situation shortly after turning two years old due to severe neglect. The early years of a child's life are fundamentally important. With early years such as this, my artwork is an epistemological approach to human nature via the figure. I have an inherent need to explore the nurture/nature supposition; the understanding of self/other is at the center of everything I do.

Every artwork starts with my studied field of photography, although the transformation of surface to a visceral topography is instinctual to my process. With diverse influences such as Carravagio, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois and The Starn Twins, I take risks with paint, wax and other media to activate my psyche and allow the creative subconscious to play, remember and dream. From the Oracle of Delphi, to Carl Jung's Shadow, and the many layers of Quantum Physics, I endeavor to surpass a literal (re)presentation of the subject and allow a universal metaphor / language to evolve.

Nichole DeMent is a photographic-based artist, educator, and curator that co-owns Rock|DeMent visual art space, a studio and gallery in Pioneer Square. She recently commited to a career as a full time artist that is on the rise. Nichole has taught fine art with a photographic focus at regional institutions such as Pacific Lutheran University and Photographic Center Northwest since 2005. Artist statement
My work reflects both the landscape I grew up in and my interest in the underlying structure of natural objects. Growing up in Indiana, with its expansive skies and industrial structures, nurtured my appreciation for clean, minimal forms. The Midwest’s vast fields and skies served as a visual canvas to power lines, granaries, and silos- structures wrought from pure function. These immense objects impressed upon me the feeling that structure itself is beauty, and the bare bones of a form are the often the beautiful parts.
My work is an exploration of these structural forms - building up a single line or shape into a dense mass, or distilling forms into their skeletal supports. All of my work revolves around crystalline growth: I am fascinated with the way that something made purely of hard edges and angles can grow as organically as a flower. I mimic crystalline formations in my jewelry, constructing simple wire forms into hard-edged, slightly chaotic structures.

Hello, I'm Dennis Golden and I am a landscape painter and photographer. For the past 12 years, Ive been to some of the most interesting places in the western US and experienced awesome scenery.

Born in Los Angeles CA, I have lived in Fremont, CA, Reno, NV, in the foothills outside of Denver, CO throughout my childhood. In College I moved around and traveled to many different places through the West photographing wild lands from deserts to high mountain Peaks and beyond. I photograph the scene then take it home and paint the scene using acrylic paint on 11x14 canvas board.

I Moved to Seattle, WA in 2006 for not only more opportunity in my art Carrier and more culture, but the scenic beauty of this are is awe inspiring. In Washington you can go from Temperate Rain forest to glacier covered mountains to desert all within sight of each other. Not to many places around like that with all of these different micro climates than in the Pacific Northwest. Artist Statement for Lora Abernathy

I grew up in Tucson, Arizona surrounded by the unconventional beauty of the high desert. It never occurred to me that the word “desert” meant a harsh, boring or, perhaps even intimidating place for those who had never experienced it. I took great joy in taking people into the desert to wonder at the symmetry of thorns on a barrel cactus or the incredible patterns left in the skeleton of a dying saguaro.

I left Arizona many years ago but my fascination with patterns as they appear as parts of a bigger whole continues to inform what I photograph. I continue to find joy in showing people the extraordinary in the ordinary. I enjoy abstracting the organic, natural world. The irony here is simply this: In order to abstract something from our natural surroundings it usually necessitates simply removing it from its larger context and it suddenly becomes a beautiful, though unidentifiable, form in its own right.

I was visiting a photographic exhibition at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston recently where I came upon some photographs taken in the first half of the 20th century that were of organic shapes that had been slightly abstracted. They referred to this a “biomorphism” – a kind of surrealism using free-flowing, organic forms. This fits. As a fairly new photographer exploring new paths, stumbling upon this work has been both illuminating and validating. It could be awhile before I have anything on the walls of the Museum of Fine Art. In the meantime, I hope you take the time to view my work around West Seattle.

The novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Le Petit Prince (The Little
Prince), is about a little boy who lives on an asteroid with one rose
and three volcanoes that come up to his knees, one of which is extinct
at that. When The Little Prince realizes he is unhappy, he sets off to
learn about life and visits seven nearby planets, the last of which is
Earth. On his travels, he meets The Lamplighter, a man under orders to
extinguish his lamp at daybreak and light it again at dusk. The
Lamplighter explains how his task, once useful, has became absurd over
time as his planet began spinning more and more quickly. Now that a
new day occurs every minute, the lamplighter is so busy there isn't a
moment to sleep. Is not The Lamplighter a metaphor for our own
condition and times? I know it happens to me. I get so busy doing
things I think are of greater consequence that I often miss the
smaller, simpler things that really make up the truly significant
stuff (seeing the stars, sharing a sunrise, listening to a friend,
making a dance, putting my hands in the earth, talking to the
elephants). The Little Prince is a fable about how money, ego and
power close our hearts over time and turn into dimwitted adults.

An artist most of my life, three years of study in the 1970s at the San Francisco Art Institute instilled a conceptual and process approach to visual art. Photographs were, and are, documentation of performances, performances for small gatherings and for one, just the machine and me. I reconnected with visual art in the neo-expressionist eighties, then in the nineties returned to process-generated drawings and paintings, as now, pulled from or inspired by life but not literally drawn from life. For a long period I retreated to punk-era duplication and appropriation modes, collages built from headlines and ripped from papers, manipulated only slightly to reveal the questioning hand of the not-so-gullible consumer.

For the last several years I have been working in series, often based in short texts and usually executed on whatever is cheaply available—consumer-product packaging, the pseudo-credit and discount cards received in the mail, and business reply cards. Media are approached as nonchalantly as support material: ink pens, permanent markers, water-soluble crayons, spray enamel, and random elements affixed by glue. I am drawn to creating ever new spaces, non-existent but non-fantastic images.

The works here are explorations of grisaille, the generally monochromatic range of tones available from black and white. Starting with some pieces on matt board discards, I began to fill sketchbooks with drawings, notations in grey, random pieces, always trying to be different from the last, in which the very process of placing the mark is primary. I try to undercut that self-imposed importance—“the burden of originality”, which is a certain block to creativity, by using templates cut from cardstock; random dots, lines, and shapes through which I make marks. The template-instigated marks may disappear, or they may re-appear as the finishing statement.

Jack Johnston has published non-fiction and artwork in KNOCK Magazine, the literary journal of Antioch University Seattle. Three vintage, self-portrait Polaroid SX-70 photographs were in the group show, “Instant Joy,” at A. M. Richard Fine Art, Brooklyn, NY, in June 2010. Nine more of the self-portrait Polaroids, circa 1978, were included in the Gay City Health Project anthology, Re-Pulped, Vol. 3, summer 2010. Additionally, he has exhibited in numerous group shows since 2007 at Antioch University Seattle, for which he was one of a team of curators. Jack remains a vital member of the art committee at AUS, most recently curating a show by Mary Coss and June Sekiguchi. Jack and his partner David are monetarily-deprived but avid art collectors.

I have lived in Seattle for over 15 years, but my roots go back to the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, where I first got interested in photography. After a particularly bad ice storm, I took my old "point and shoot" camera out to a local play field close to my childhood home. It was a cold, brilliantly sunny day, everything was glistening. I spent hours in the cold trying to capture the beauty of the "shiny trees." Today I may have different gear, but I still have that same drive to find just the right angle, the right perspective…to find just the right lines.

Repeating shapes and strong contours evoke a sense of permanence. Rusting metal, fading paint, and broken glass captured in the strength of the midday sun reveal the texture and beauty of decline. “Power and Decay” showcases photos taken during my recent trips to Atlanta and around northwestern Arizona.

A year ago my mother went through chemotheapy and I had to be present for her 6 month treatment. At that time I had to let all the hardship from my childhood die so that I could be present to support my mom's recovery. In the car I listened to old hispanic stories about life and death and learned that you needed to have life to have death and death to have life again. I practice this idea in my own life. All of the skeletons in “Skeletons at the Table” are dressed in their best. They are here to have fun and represent all the positive times you have experienced, to bring joy and laughter to your table. Their bony grins create a quiet reminder to let some things die, allowing room for the present.

ArtsWest Gallery presents four regional artists in THE EDGE OF NIGHT; featuring three Seattle-based artists, C. ALBERT, JEAN BRADBURY, MONIKA DALKIN, and Portland artist DAVID CARMACK LEWIS. Two painters, a mixed media and a collage artist, each offer a unique, narrative style which can at times be slightly unsettling, like the place between wakefulness and dreams, like the edge of night.

C. ALBERT’s collages are assembled from various image sources including magazine clippings, colored pencil drawings and dimensional objects. Cutting, gluing and building up the surface of each work, the collages evolve organically with a surrealist resonance. The award-winning artist has been a regular participant in exhibitions in the Northwest as well as in Florida, Illinois, Washington D.C, and New York.

JEAN BRADBURY’s masterful oil paintings are both joyful and sinister, joining observations of the natural world with fanciful images of animals. Born in the Shetland Islands, U.K. she grew up on her parent’s organic farm in New Brunswick, Canada. It was there she learned to see plants and animals as a natural part of her emotional life. She completed her BFA in painting at Queen’s University and spent time traveling Europe and the Near East developing an interest in art history, natural dyes and archeology.

MONIKA DALKIN is a mixed-media artist who draws upon a host of media to develop her work. Initially inspired by everyday objects and situations, she then chooses the medium or media that best interpret her ideas: woodcut prints, etchings, fabric, dyes, thread, ceramics, pastel and more, are organized with deference to shape, color, balance, order, repetition and rhythm. The award-winning artist has a long exhibition history and is included in the collections of the University of Hawaii, the University of Arizona and the University of Minnesota.

Portland artist DAVID CARMACK LEWIS’s oil paintings on canvas interpret the limited spectrums of nighttime light sources, both natural and manmade, and are often populated by what is not there: an empty chair near a small fire, an elegantly lit theatre without an audience. His theatre paintings suggest the striking black and white photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto of empty movie theaters, but with the subtle hues of night. Lewis has participated in juried shows throughout the region, as well as in New Mexico, Arizona and South Africa.

I cannot even recall what prompted me to make the decision to study black & white photography in community college, some 30 years ago, but since then, much of my life has been viewed through the lens of a camera. Although at the time I greatly enjoyed learning the process of film development and darkroom printing, I was never all that interested in the technical aspect of photography, but more so the visual aspect; the creation, composition and capturing of an emotion inspiring image, and after those 2 years of study, I never set foot in a darkroom again. I believe that the most beautiful and interesting images often come from the most everyday of objects-it is the way of seeing things from a unique perspective which will bring this beauty to light. Lacking much in-depth knowledge of today’s advanced digital and technical equipment, I tend rather to involve all of my senses and spirit in capturing a moment in time which I feel has the visual power to evoke memory, curiosity, wonder, awe, and most importantly, a smile in the viewer. My camera is simple and my photographs remain “organic” in the sense that no enhancement, special lenses, computer manipulation, etc. is used to create the images. I feel that the use of what I deem “artificial” processes lessens the sense of satisfaction and excitement which I experience when capturing a moment in“real life”, as the natural state of an image is most powerful and pure in its original, unchanged form. I believe that what is most importantly required of me or anyone else desiring to create a “good” photograph is simply an open heart and mind, which will in turn allow you to view the world with anticipation and expectation of finding beauty and intrigue in every little thing that your imagination opens your eyes to be able to see! Everyday life is so interesting in an abundance of simple yet touching ways, and I strive to capture what speaks to me, often in the most unexpected and seemingly ordinary places. I am never without my camera, and can contentedly disappear into the “zone”, or, more appropriately, the “Zen” of taking pictures for hours upon hours at a time. It is a powerfully fulfilling “addiction” to me, with my fondest hope being that something in my images will bring a moment of joy to someone else, and I consider it a great privilege and honor to share my visual world with others. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1960 and lived there until May 2008, when I moved to the Seattle area to be with my soul mate Jeff. I currently enjoy the freedom from traditional employment which allows me plenty of opportunity to explore and discover the amazing bounty of beauty to be found in the Pacific Northwest. I am the proud mom of a 23 year old son, Trevor, and 26 year old daughter, Kaelyn, and loving “Gooma” to my grandson, Ryatt, born in Sept. 2009.Some of my other passions include our three Basset Hounds, music, architecture, reading, writing, traveling, the beach, thrift store shopping, classic cars, animal welfare, and various creative endeavors.Thank you for viewing my images.

My passion for the wonderful world of photography started many years ago when I was introduced to the darkroom and all of its magical potential. I've been hooked/involved ever since. Over the years, many an hour has been spent in the darkroom developing film and printing images, taking classes, and of course shooting pictures. Digital photography has changed all of that and now the darkroom has been replaced by a computer and software. The learning? Well, that continues every day. My subject matter is nature, birds, water, the sky and objects that have seen better days. I try with each image to make the viewer pause and think even if only for a minute. The technique used in most of the images you see here is called Intentional Camera Movement or, ICM. It is essentially a distinct movement of the camera combined with a slow shutter speed. I move the camera in what is called a panning motion from side to side or, on occasion, vertically. The shutter speeds I use vary somewhere between from as much as a half second up to 1/20 which gives the hint of movement in the subject. Michael Rollins

ArtsWest is excited to announce its latest gallery exhibition, Evolution of a Diva. A range of lively work exploring collage, athletic women, and Mother Nature, this three-person show will feature Seattle artists Mark Kaufman and Patricia Ridenour, and Renton artist, Barbara Benedetti Newton. Mark Kaufman’s collages combine vintage print media and illustration to create clever and boldly graphic juxtapositions. The hand-crafted (cut and paste, done with a knife and adhesive), paper and ink evoke a harmony and tension between nostalgia and humor. His illustrations have appeared in publications nationwide including the New York Times, The Stranger and National Lampoon. Certificates of merit include The Society of Publication Designers, Print magazine, Graphic Design USA, American Corporate Identity and the Art Directors Club of New Jersey. Patricia Ridenour uses computer software to combine photographic images of synchronized women swimmers with the ethereal space of water, sky and clouds. This powerful and arresting work is part of her Surface series which won first place in the 2010 International Photography Awards. She is a recipient of several Washington State Arts Commissions including Metro Bus Shelter Installations, which offer images from Surface. An award winning photographer and photography instructor, her work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington DC. Barbara Benedetti Newton has worked exclusively in colored pencil for more than a dozen years. Since 2002 she has shifted her focus to soft pastel. These pieces straddle a place between figurative landscape and pure abstraction capturing the light, color and mood of the natural world. She began her career as a fashion illustrator in Seattle and later, San Francisco. After buying a filbert farm on Vashon Island, she took a 20 year hiatus from her artwork to raise her family and a flock of wool bred sheep. In 2000, she co-authored Colored Pencil Solution Book. Her work has been published in American Artist, International Artist, and The Artist’s magazine. Evolution of a Diva brings together three diversely gifted artists with visually compelling work that has evolved over many years. The exhibition runs August 30 through October 8. My first attempt at being a professional artist took place early in my human existence, I was 4 years old. I spent days on producing colorful horse drawings, at least a dozen of them, maybe more like 20. They were all very geometrical and abstract. The bodies of the horses were rectangular with rectangular heads and both eyes showing, as tho’ their heads were cocked to look at the person looking at the art. I laid out the drawings carefully on the lawn in front of my grandparent’s house, using pebbles to weigh down the corners. It was a great idea, people would walk past and see them and instantly want to buy them at 5 cents each, or at least, that’s what I thought.

Growing up in Japan, Thomas discovered his passion for photographyat the young age of eight. His career began on a small Navy newspaper, the Seahawk,covering local sports and events. He then embarked on a journey to Seattle in 1994 to attend theArt Institute of Seattle, where he furthered his artistic and technical skills and received his degree in commercial photography.

Thomas developed an innovative and conceptual style, photographinga wide range of subject matter from the abstract avant garde, to hauntingimages of people and nature. Ruth Moen brings to her acrylic folk art the influences of her extensive world travels, passion for innovation and delight in things untamed. Using stripes, splashes, swirls and flourishes of luscious hues, she transforms otherwise simple chairs, bowls and plates so that they appear to have just floated in from an enchanted wonderland. Ruth takes wonderful photos during her travels and transforms them into three dimensional wall sculptures. The photo gets lost in that thin line between reality and fantasies, giving each piece an almost ethereal quality.
