Dr. Krieger July Artist Julie Nugent-Carney

Chemical Reactions

Adrenaline, testosterone, serotonin, endorphins, pheromones…endogenous chemicals rising and falling with each new stimulus.

Like wind blowing clouds, invisible particles surge and bodies become canvas.

But what if these chemicals extended beyond the confines of the body? What would emotional storms look like?

What is we could see the electrical attractions between people? What if we could witness the chemical reaction created by deep emotions such as longing and desire?

What would it look like?

About the Artist
Julie Nugent-Carney has been a West Seattle resident and painter for over 20 years, and has enjoyed watching the local arts community grow and flourish. Julie explored a wide range of media and techniques before completing her undergraduate program, but her work has maintained an affinity for bold colors and movement.

8 Limbs Yoga July Artist Laurie Zak

Photographs by Laurie Zak

"I believe that an open heart and mind gives me the expectation of finding beauty and intrigue in everyday life, which is so interesting in an abundance of simple yet touching ways. I strive to capture what speaks to me, often in the most unexpected and seemingly ordinary places. I involve all of my senses in capturing a moment in time which I feel has the visual power to evoke memory, curiosity, wonder, awe, and most importantly, a smile in the viewer."

West Seattle Wine Cellars July Artist Tim Marsden

We're delighted to welcome back Tim Marsden as our featured artist this month. Tim was born in Liverpool, studied art in London, and has traveled back and forth between Europe and North America most of his life. He now makes his home in Seattle where he has been involved with the local arts community on many levels. He has shown extensively in the area, from his own studio/gallery space, to the Lava Lounge, to Pioneer Square. On Thursday evenings Tim hosts a weekly arts group known simply as Artnight. Tim's work is a recognizable figurative style using a bold palette and cartoonish imagery, while also exploring the darker, more absurd aspects of human existence. "I go to great pains to keep the work within an art historical context." To see some of his work, go to www.etmarsden.com.

On the same night as Art Walk this month, our weekly free wine tasting will feature South African wines, in honor of the World Cup finals! No vuvuzelas necessary, just come and try some great wines from South Africa. Also, this week only, we're having a special sale. All wines over $25 are 15% off (20% off for wine club members). Sale ends Saturday, July 10. Come by, check out Tim's cool art, try some wines, and grab some amazing discounts.

Holly Theriot has been creating since childhood. Her fondness for fashion and clothing led her to FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) in Los Angeles, where she was educated in fashion illustration, from which she draws inspiration for her art today. Portraits and the female form are common subjects in her work with lead, pen & ink and marker, while her oil and acrylic paintings tend toward a dreamy, abstract world bursting with vibrant colors.

Hotwire Coffee July Artist Grego Rachko

Grego Rachko gratch07@gmail.com

Using words, patterns and images in paintings, I explore questions about spirituality, culture, sensuality and community.

I paint patterns as a way of reflecting the patterns in our own lives. We create patterns to decorate objects, gardens, fabrics, ourselves and just to create beauty. Our societies, religions, and cultures happen in patterns that give our lives meaning. I use patterns in a painting to reinforce both the composition and the content.

Hotwire will also have street performers and other mystery events.

Bin 41 July Art Walk Events

This is sure to be one of the best art night’s yet as the street will be closed to traffic in the Junction in preparation for the West Seattle Summer Fest that starts the following day. We will be hosting local West Seattle photographer, Linda Fornero at the bin. Since 1990, Linda has been observing the beauty of West Seattle and beyond from behind the lens of her camera. Her photography is a self expression of her inner love and respect for the natural environment; capturing the zen that arises from being in a natural setting.

While you’re viewing Linda’s work, you can sample some wines from one of our favorite Oregon winemaking couples, Athena and Stewart Boedecker. They make a myriad of wines together, but each separately make a Pinot Noir based on their individual palates. We will be blind tasting their individual wines....see if you can guess who made which one!

And...drum roll please...to make things even more festive, we will have two different, local musical groups joining us at the bin for the evening. Dave and the Dalmatians, a group of eight guys singing songs from the Croatian coast and beyond will be greeting you outside. Later in the evening, we will again be joined by Reddog, the three piece acoustical string band that shared their musical artistry during the last art walk. Visit their websites to learn more about each band at www.daveandthedalmatians.com and www.reddogseattle.com

We hope to see you at the bin this Thursday for some great wines, art and live music!

Art West July Shows

Photographer and digital wizard Dr. Mark Morgan collects all the moments of his life to build his surreal digital montages. Morgan draws on inspiration ranging from a stray remark from a stranger on the street to a particularly moving song lyric.

Mindy Barker draws outside the lines in her series “Mixed-Up Media.” Beginning from a photograph, Barker creates unique worlds of allusions using ink and acrylic paint. For example, a simple snapshot of a dog transforms into a colorful roller-skating worm with a prehensile tail and the words “SLURP,” “BLINK” and “YES” playfully intertwined within the piece.

Alive with creative spark, Anita West is an artist as well as an educator for an all-girls school in Kuwait. Reminiscent of Seurat’s Pointillism, West’s images of wobbly kneed camels, cats, and goats contain intricate designs from Persian culture.

Martha Brouwer is a multi-award winning artist holding a Master’s degree from Harvard University. Utilizing intricate surface texture and technique, Brouwer’s inspiring works convey a delicate and nurturing display of human life intertwined with the animal world.

Lukas Allenbaugh (a.k.a. "Mr. A") of Clay Animations Network will present a projected video in AMP at ArtsWest for Inexplicable Allusions. Allenbaugh teaches animation as a multidisciplinary and highly expressive medium incorporating different methods using physics, math, language arts, theater, and visual arts. His techniques include the use of traditional camera equipment and clay in his whimsical stop-frame animations.
